Caminos de Lengua y Cultura

As part of a larger project funded by the Arts & Humanities Research Council Impact Acceleration Account at Swansea University, Caminos de Lengua y Cultura is an innovative project led by Swansea University in collaboration with Nuestra Escuela Cardiff (NEC) and Theatr na nÓg.

The project explores how language, culture, and identity intersect in the lives of heritage speakers of Spanish in Wales.

With over 4,000 complementary schools across the UK teaching more than 60 languages, and over 20% of children growing up in multilingual homes, there is an increasing need to support heritage language learning through culturally and linguistically relevant approaches.

Our Aims

The project seeks to:

Create a community of good practice among heritage language schools.
Support teachers in developing effective teaching and assessment strategies for learners of different ages and proficiency levels.
Foster cultural awareness and affirmation in the classroom by connecting language learning with home and community experiences.

What We Do

Through a series of theatre-based workshops and interactive sessions, children explore their multilingual identities in creative and supportive environments.

Theatre and Identity: Six 90-minute workshops invite children to take the stage, use their languages, and tell their own stories. This artistic approach helps them find and celebrate their multilingual voice.
Workshops for Families and Educators: Our sessions focus on sharing experiences, exploring the joys and challenges of raising and educating bilingual children, celebrating cultural belonging, and providing practical tools and training for teaching heritage languages.

Parents have told us that these workshops have been transformative - helping children express pride in their heritage, rediscover their languages, and share their stories with confidence.

Our Vision

Caminos de Lengua y Cultura celebrates multilingualism as a strength. By bringing together children, families, educators, and researchers, we aim to bridge research and community experience, nurturing the next generation of multilingual, global citizens for an inclusive and outward-looking Wales.

Caminos de Lengua y Cultura is Going Global!

The Swansea University team is excited to share that our AHRC IAA project will be presented at BHL 2026 in Reading and at BMS26 in Milan, Italy. This is a fantastic opportunity to showcase the insights from our theatre workshops and engagement seminars, and to share these experiences with an international audience of researchers, educators, and practitioners.

Nuestros objetivos

Entender mejor cómo aprenden los niños.
Investigamos los diferentes factores que influyen en el aprendizaje de lengua, como el vocabulario, la identidad cultural y las experiencias familiares, a través de divertidas sesiones interactivas con los niños y sus padres.

Desarrollar mejores formas de enseñar.
A través de talleres con educadores y otros profesionales, estamos creando un modelo flexible de enseñanza y evaluación de las lenguas de herencia en sintonía con el plan de estudios Curriculum for Wales.

TALLERES DE TEATRO: Apoyamos el aprendizaje del español a través del teatro

A través de nuestras sesiones de teatro apoyamos a los niños en el extranjero que aprenden español en casa - en muchos casos al mismo tiempo que el inglés, el galés y otras lenguas- fortaleciendo así los vínculos con su lengua y cultura de origen.

Estas sesiones, diseñadas especialmente para niños de entre 6 y 12 años que crecen con el español como idioma familiar y cultural, abordan de forma divertida el tema de la identidad. Dirigidas por actores profesionales de Theatr na nÓg, las actividades exploran, mediante el teatro, las conexiones entre lengua, cultura e identidad, y cómo estos elementos influyen en el aprendizaje y en la manera en que los niños se entienden a sí mismos.

Nuestra contribución

Estamos contribuyendo a que:

Los niños se sientan orgullosos de su identidad cultural y más seguros de sus habilidades lingüísticas.

Los padres entiendan cómo pueden apoyar el aprendizaje de sus hijos de forma más eficaz.

Los docentes tengan acceso a formación y herramientas didácticas adaptadas a las aulas de lengua de herencia.

Las escuelas desarrollen entornos más integrados y enriquecedores culturalmente hablando.

Los profesionales compartan y empleen las mejores prácticas por todo Gales y el resto de Reino Unido.

También estamos sentando las bases de un proyecto más amplio que podría incluir un plan de estudios íntegro para escuelas suplementarias y nuevas herramientas para hacer un seguimiento de cómo los niños aprenden y utilizan el español a lo largo del tiempo.
